I need suggestions for simple-to-use, won’t-take-up-much-space email clients. I want something other than Eudora, because I want to use it specifically for the account dealing with the book, and it was in attempting to install a second copy of Eudora that I fucked up spectacularly and lost my address book, among other things.
And don’t say Outlook Express. Anything but, please.
Leave your suggestions in the comments, if you would.

I was sitting at my desk this morning (big shocker there, eh? I spend most of my days sitting at my desk. I might as well just get a job. Except not.) when I caught sight of something out in the front flower bed. It was moving oddly, so I turned to check it out. At the same time, Miz Poo caught sight of it, and ran, whining and wildly whipping her tail back and forth, to the window.
I tried to get a picture, but her head was pretty much in the way.

It was a bunny, eating the flowers off our Petunia plants. I snapped several more pictures before I decided I’d go out and see if I could snap a picture of him before he ran off.

He froze and stared at me for about a minute, then decided I wasn’t going to go away.

He hopped next door and stood and regarded me some more, trying to decide if I was a threat. He was so still he could have been a statue.

Finally, he decided I was just too close and he’d be better off further down the street, so off he hopped.
Yes, I know that it’s weird that I’m so obsessed when rabbits and squirrels get in our yard, but they’re so little and cute, and y’all know we adore the little cute animals.
By the way, this was definitely not the same bunny who was in our back yard the other night – this one was a lot bigger.

Ever have one of those days when you wake up, put on your glasses, and trudge into the bathroom? Then you look in the mirror and think to yourself “Hey. I don’t look half bad today. In fact, I look kinda cute!”? And so you pop in your contacts and take your Synthroid and while you’re brushing your teeth, you take a closer look and notice that you have a big red raw spot on the end of your nose, bloodshot eyes, and a ‘stache that desperately needs to be united with wax?
Ever have one of those days, or is it just me?
Ah well. I’m wearing my yellow shirt, so I’m happy anyway. See how low-maintenance I am? If I was one of those gorgeous girls who placed too much importance on her appearance, I’d be in bed with the covers over my head, sobbing loudly. Me, I just put on a yellow shirt and I’m happy despite the big red spot and lush, thick ‘stache.
It’s only a matter of time before I’m going grocery shopping with curlers in my hair, wearing a muumuu, I’m sure.
As long as it’s a muumuu with yellow on it, I’ll be happy.

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it? Nope, I sure don’t. I’m sure I had a different best friend for each base we lived on. I remember a Katie and a Candi Rhodes in Kinchloe, Michigan, and a Suzanne Dembinski and Sherri Robertson or Robinson in Guam. There was Karen Frost in Loring, Maine, and a number of others whose names I can’t quite remember.
2. Are you still in touch with this person? Nope, I’m not in touch with any of them.
3. Do you have a current close friend? In real life, other than Fred, I’d have to say that my sister is my closest friend, although we don’t get a chance to talk as often as we used to.
4. How did you become friends with this person? You could say we were born to it. Heh.
5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why? I’d love to be able to find all those girls on the various bases that were friends when I was a kid, just to find out where their lives took them and where they are and what they’re doing now.
Also:
1. What were your favorite childhood stories? The
Ramona books, and later, the
Little House on the Prairie books. After reading one of the Ramona books, I was under the impression for YEARS that “Quarter past one” was 1:25.
2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children? I’d love it if the spud loved to read as much as I did (and do), and loved the
Little House books as much as I do.
3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything? I’ve re-read the
Little House books, and been surprised by how much I still enjoyed them.
4. How old were you when you first learned to read? It was probably somewhere between kindergarten and first grade, but I was desperate to learn to read for years before that.
5. Do you remember the first ‘grown-up’ book you read? How old were you? You bet your ass I do. It was
Carrie, and I was 11 or 12. I was just blown away by it – in a good way – which is probably why I still love everything Stephen King writes, whether it deserves it (
Bag of Bones the
Gunslinger series) or doesn’t (
Dreamweaver).

A Poo under the desk…

And a Spanky atop the monitor, hanging out with the screensaver.]]>
I use Mozilla (both for my browser and) for my mail and I love it. 🙂
I had a thing for the Ramona book and Little house books too :0)
Hey, if you made that last Spanky picture your screensaver, then took a picture of him on top of the computer with that screensaver, would you have Spankys ad infinitum?
Definately Mozilla. When used as a browser it refuses to let all those pop-up things annoy me. What more can I ask for?
🙂
Have a great weekend!
Man girlie….for a second there I thought Fancy had returned!
I LOVED the little house books too, such fond childhood memories.
For a pop mail client, I love Pegasus mail. It just sits there and minds its own business and doesn’t get all pissy in the presence of a second mail client the way Eudora does. (At work we used to use Pegasus to read mail from our legacy system and Groupwise for current mail.)
If you’re using IMAP (where your messages and folders stay on some remote server somewhere instead of being downloaded to your PC), don’t use Pegasus. It doesn’t really do it very well. But for POP (where you pull the messages down to your PC) it’s lovely.
I second the Pegasus recommendation. Have it, love it.
You can get it at http://www.pmail.com
Robin, I loved the Romona books, and in fact still have the ones I bought from the Book Fair our school library use to have from over 20 years ago when I was in the fifth grade! Also, “Bag of Bones” is one of my most favourite books ever!!! I read it a couple of summers ago, and couldn’t stop talking about it!
If all you want to do is check the contents of a pop3 inbox, you might try using http://www.mail2web.com. It’s a great way to check email from whereever you are without having to have a dedicated email client. I use it to check my private email accounts while at work, since the firewall here blocks pop clients. It doesn’t install anything on your PC, it all runs through the browser. The mail stays on the server. And their logo is sort of a smileyface, so you’re even ahead there…
Robyn – do you not want to use a second personality in Eudora? That’s what I did when I taught college – I didn’t want the little frekshows jamming my personal email box so I set a filter to put all mail sent to my school account in a box, and when I replied, it automatically came from that email address. The only problem is that when you generate new mail you have to remember to change that “From” line so it’s your business email address. But I’ve managed multiple personalities on Eudora quite successfully.
The part you don’t want to know is that I do it now – very successfully in Outlook Express. It actually allows to have a separate client. NOT OUTLOOK, but Outlook Express. Never got Outlook to manage multiple personalities at all.

HA!
I slay me!
I was partical to Encyclopedia Brown, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle and later Cherry Ames Nurse books
Love me some good mysterys still to this day!
Robyn – Okay, now you REALLY need to pay a visit to the other Portland – Portland, Oregon! Beverly Cleary is an Oregon native, and the Multnomah County Library has a sculpture garden devoted to her characters:

C.
Jenniffer – Yes – and I’ve done that before. Actually, I had a webcam, and shot a picture of Spanky sitting on the monitor, upon which was a picture of him sitting on the monitor, and it went into infinity and made me dizzy.
Pegasus lovers – I don’t like Pegasus much, but that’s only because of the way it handles attachments, which is confusing to me. However, the email address I’m contemplating using it for shouldn’t get many attachments, so perhaps I’ll just suck it up and use Pegasus.
Lori – I do have several personalities going on in my Eudora. I love Eudora, and that’s one of the reasons why, because you can have lots of different personalities. I want this particular email address to be in it’s own email client, because it’s a business email (or will be), and that domain seems to be down at least once a day, and I’m tired of getting the error message.
Cheryle – too cool!
just wondering, you said you should get a job? you mean you don’t work??? wow that is pretty great and you’re very lucky !!
You must be a new reader. Nope, I don’t have a job, and yep, it’s very nice.
This is embarrassing to admit, but I was in rabbit 4H back in the day (shh) and I did trophy-winning speach about the difference between rabbits and hares … and that your visitor is definitely not a rabbit — it’s a hare!
Heh – they’re all bunnies to me!
We use something called Mullberry. It’s small, and I love it, but I’ve never used Eudora, so I don’t know if it would compare. I’m pretty sure it’s free, though, so you could try it and then if you hated it just delete it!

I always love your pics!
We call them jackrabbits around here…they’re pretty vicious. We can’t raise a vegetable garden or they’ll be at it in seconds, ugh.
Incredimail?
Hi Robyn,
I have several installs of Eudora on my PC for my different email addresses. You just have to type in a new subdirectory name when it asks you where to put it. I’ve screwed it up before by insalling a new version in the default directory.. You can even have multiple installs open and checking mail at the same time. Eudora rocks!
-Nancy
wow those rabbits look like freakin kangaroos… we have bunnies and yea they do a job on the veggie garden so much so that nope, not this year I refuse to. anyway, love the site, and oh by the way…. since you don’t work, can I ask how long has it been since you’ve been unemployed? gawd, I would lose my mind in boredom…. some days it would be great but I think I’d get sick of it…anyway glad you enjoy doing nothing but kickin back…
Nancy – that must be what I did wrong, because it screwed my regular mail up, bigtime. Grr!
Kara – All nonworking questions are addressed in question #8 of the FAQ. 🙂
I sgree with adriel as soon as i saw it’s freky back legs i thoguht it was a hare!
ugh! my typing, sorry robyn!
Hi Robyn,
This is the first time I’ve posted on your site. I love your blog! I’m responding to your email client question. I used to use eudora and really loved it. Now I use apple’s email client that comes with osx and it’s pretty swell. It handles my plethora of email addresses very nicely. But, heck, I don’t even know if you use a mac. Anyway, just thought I’d mention it. Also, I love that pic of Tubby with tongue. Whenever our cats do that, my boyfriend and I always announce, “Tongue-age!”. Of course, there are different levels of tongue-age… as in “total tongue-age”, “massive tongue-age”, you get the idea.
