* * * We finally got the box of stuff we sent ourselves from Gatlinburg, and BELIEVE YOU ME I was cursing the woman who’d packed the box for us. By the time I was done scooping those evil fucking styrofoam peanuts out of the box, I had two big garbage bags full of nothing but the fucking things (Fred dropped them off at a Mailboxes, Etc. the next morning. Recycling at it’s finest.). I loathe those fucking things, HATE THEM. What’s wrong with plain old bubble wrap? NOTHING, that’s what. I swear, the next time I get a box with peanuts in it, I’m going to be forced to go on a shooting spree. Styrofoam peanuts = pure evil. Ugh. Anyway, I took pictures of most of the stuff I bought for you to enjoy. Who loves ya? Why, yes. That would be me. I always buy tons of magnets when we’re in G’burg, some of them from World O’ Magnets, and some in other gift stores. I do love the magnets.

Fred surprised me by buying this one for me. Awww. My favorite. Heh. Love the Happy Bunny!
In fact, I got so many magnets that I decided to get rid of some of the ones I’ve bought in the past and give them away on the giveaway page (I’ll get that done later today or tomorrow, promise!).
A blurry shot of some of the salsa Fred bought at The Pepper Palace. We won a shot glass from Fannie Farkle’s (an arcade). Fred usually gets the obnoxious t-shirts, but when I saw the back, I had to get this one for myself. Above is the front… The back. Heh. (You can get your own here.) Because we just don’t have enough cups. Really! Two Quarry Cats to add to my collection.
And that’s about it. As usual, we bought a bunch of stuff we don’t need. Which is what you’re supposed to do on vacation, right? You can see what Fred bought, here.
* * *
I was looking for a magnet yesterday, when I ran across a couple of t-shirts that made me laugh.
Don’t I need this shirt? I don’t know why this made me laugh. It just did!
* * *
Since we didn’t have a cake on Fred’s birthday (it was a Wednesday and we were leaving the next day for Gatlinburg), we decided to have one today. I made him call and order it himself. He told them to put a lot of roses on it, though didn’t specify what color the roses should be. When I picked it up this morning, I was surprised to see just how girly the colors were:
Pretty, no?
I have a feeling I’ll be coming down from a serious sugar high in about six hours…

I have those red Coke cups and I LOVE them. I am excited about the giveaway. I always lusted after the magnet you got of the cows that said “Bessie milked herself” and I have searched high and low to the point I will probably now have to go to Gatlinburg just to visit that magnet store!

Sappy as all get out but leaves me in tears every time

  23. Flashback to 1985.
A 12 year old girl goes camping with her family. She met the boy who’s parents own the campground. They became friends. Each summer the girl and her family return. One summer, she brought a friend camping with her and her best friend dated the boy. She dated his best friend. They never dated each other. During 10th grade, her parents divorced, and the family doesn’t return. At that point, she is 16, and they contact each other by phone. It is long distance so they can’t talk much. They lose touch when the girl moves out of her Dad’s house, on her own at 17.
    Fast forward to 1994.
The girl is 22, living on her own with a two year old baby. She has a boyfriend. The phone rings and it is her friend from the campground. They catch up on all the news, his parents sold the campground, he moved away, and find out that they are now both living in the same city. They don’t talk long,(due to her having a boyfriend) and say their good-byes.
1 year passes (1995) and the girl has broken up with her boyfriend, and decides one night to call her old friend. She locates his number through his mother, who is listed in the phone book. She contacts him, and they talk for a while. He tells her he has a girlfriend, and they share a knowing laugh over over their poor timing. Once again, they say their good-byes feeling a little sad.
1996 arrives, and one day he shows up on her porch, she is single, he is single. They spend a couple of months together, she goes to listen to his band (he is a wonderful country singer and guitar player) He calls her sometimes on the phone and plays his guitar and sings to her. (Drift off to Dream) They spend manyclate nights talking on her porch, etc. They’re somewhat dating. But neither mentions it.
One night, they kiss and it turns into more. Way more. He leaves in the middle of the night while she is sleeping.
The next day he calls and apologizes, saying he wished it didn’t happen, and he’s not ready for more. Her heart is shattered.
Oddly, within days she meets someone on-line, she wasn’t even looking. They start talking on the phone, they meet in person, she really likes this guy.
A few weeks after the incident with her old friend, the phone rings and it is him.
She tells him about her meeting someone, and that this guy is amazing. The phone call doesn’t take long, but still, hanging up is tough. She could feel so many things left unsaid. She is not very regretful, she is crazy about this new man in her life- almost too good to be true, but still there is a sense of sadness, and what if.
2002- 6 years later. She is visiting her old city, and out for the evening with a girlfriend. They are visiting a couple of their old hangouts. On their second stop, she notices the sign outside is announcing her old friends band. Is he even still with them?
Once inside they find a dark corner booth. The band is on a break. She finally spots her old friend at a table, with what looks like some of his some friends. Not knowing his circumstances (girlfriend? married? its been almost 6 years) and not wanting to walk up and say hi, she decides to send a beer up to the stage via the waitress. People do it all the time. The band resumes playing. She asks a waitress to send a drink up to him. The waitress asks who she is. She says- an old friend who lives in the U.S now. (she used to live in Canada) But her on- line love/husband was from the States and they have been happily living there ever since they got married.
In between songs, the waitress slides up to the stage, and passes him his beer. He bends down to get it, and the waitress says something in his ear. The waitress points in her direction.
He looks out toward the crowd, but cant see out into the darkness, stage lights in his eyes. He takes a swig of the beer sets it down by his feet. Suddenly he leans into the mic and says her name. Not a question, a statement. In the dark corner booth , she smiles. He knows. He smiles. He turns to the band and speaks with them for a minute.
He looks out to the crowd and says “this ones for you.”
He picks up his acoustic guitar and plays “In a Week or Two” by Diamond Rio. He sings out into the dark, yet directly to her. It is beautiful. It almost breaks her heart. It sums things up perfectly.
After the next set he stops by her table, to say Hi. They share a hug. He does indeed have a girlfriend, and she is there, watching. They make their conversation short. She tells him she is vary happily married to the same man that entered he life back in 1996. They part with another hug.
She walks out with her heart a little lighter. Life goes on.
In a Week or Two- Diamond Rio, brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it Robyn.

  24. I’m a sucker for angry songs…
but Tori Amos has a good collection of melancholy tunes. Putting the Damage On, 1000 Oceans, Playboy Mommy, Northern Lad, Tear in Your Hand, A Sort of Fairytale with You, and Taxi Ride… to name a few.

  25. “Time After Time” – Cyndi Lauper
    “Live To Tell” – Madonna
Not usually my type of music but man, oh MAN…those two songs mess me up every time.
And ‘Word’ to whoever said “Dance With My Father” by Luther Vandross. The station that we have to listen to at work plays it at least 3 times a day and I have to consciously NOT listen to the lyrics if I don’t want to be a blubbering fool.
    Donna? GREAT story. Wow!

  26. Ooh, just thought of another one:
    “Nothing Else Matters” – Metallica
OK…now I MUST get back to work!

  27. “Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin
I seriously cannot listen to this song without blubbering. Might be because of my issues with my dad, however.

  28. The Song Remains the Same — Trisha Yearwood
Good as I Was to You — Lorrie Morgan
    The Flame — Cheap Trick
Impossible Dream (Man of LaMancha soundtrack)

  29. Back in college, a friend of mine was pretty unceremoniously dumped by his girl of a year or two and after a couple of weeks of utter dejection, he started coming around. He always used to joke about wanting to hole himself up in his room and listen to depressing tunes all day so we invented the “Songs to Listen to and Wallow in Self Pity By” list. It should include most of Chris Isaak’s “Forever Blue” album and I can’t believe I left out U2’s “With or Without You” but this is what I burned for a friend of mine who wanted some sad tunes to listen to:
Don’t Follow – Alice in Chains
Let Her Cry – Hootie and the Blowfish
    Drive – The Cars
    Black – Pearl Jam
King of Pain – The Police
    Last Beautiful Girl – Matchbox20
No One is to Blame – Howard Jones
    Somebody’s Crying – Chris Isaak
    People Change – Rockapella
    Rest Stop – Matchbox20
    Mad About You – Sting
Par Avion – Mike + The Mechanics
    I’m Alive – Jackson Browne
My Love’s Leavin’ – Steve Winwood
    Forever Blue – Chris Isaak
I Still Miss Someone – Johnny Cash
    I believe – Chris Isaak
Why Should I Cry for You – Sting

  30. “Somebody” by Depech Mode (or “Depeche Commode” as my husband likes to call them)–saddest song EVER!
“Mandy” By Barry Manilow (I *love* me some Barry!)

  31. “The Bridge of Tears” by Clannad; “Spirit of the Sea” by Blackmore’s Night; “Short a Penny” by Siobhán Skates; “Donegal Breeze” by Mary Black.
And also “The End” by Dollie de Luxe (Ingrid Bjornov and Benedicte Adrian), which might be a bit difficult to get hold of, since it’s fairly old and by Norwegian artists.
And thank you for answering my question about what “spud” means; I always love learning new words, and I agree that it sounds cute 🙂

  32. I was going to say Angel from Montgomery, but it’s already been suggested, so I’m seconding it. It always puts a lump in my throat.

  33. The Evanescence song is DEFINATELY “My Immortal,” I play it every morning in my car on the way to work. (You can tell I REALLY love my job eh?)
I betcha you love the line, “And I realized I’ve been ALONEEEEEEEEE all ALONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!” At least that’s the one that makes me sob out loud!

  34. Hey Robyn, been reading your site for awhile now but this is the first time I’ve posted. What can I say, sad songs do it for me. 😉 In fact, I just heard a good one on the radio called “I Wanna Make You Cry” but I can’t remember who sang it. Anyway, more sad songs:
The Long Goodbye — Brooks and Dunn
    Cry — Faith Hill
The Thunder Rolls — Garth Brooks
Songs About Rain — Gary Allan (I think it’s sad anyway)
There Goes My Life — Kenny Chesney
    I’m Already There — Lonestar
It Doesn’t Mean I Don’t Love You — McHayes (SO good!)
I’m Movin On — Rascal Flatts
What If She’s An Angel — Tommy Shane Steiner
One of These Days — Tim McGraw
Take Me Away From Here — Tim also
Tears in the Rain — Tim again
You Don’t Love Me Anymore, Please Remember Me, You Get Used to Somebody, Forget About Us, and Why We Said Goodbye are all fairly sad Tim songs. Also, have you heard his latest, Live Like You’re Dying? There’s something about the tune that I just find depressing, but I don’t know if it’s what you’d have in mind.
    And the ultimate sad song:
You’ve Lost That Lovin Feelin — Righteous Brothers 🙂

  35. That is a serriously cute cake. Cute in a sweet 16 kind of way, but cute nonetheless. Glad to hear that you and Fred had a great time!

  36. “Wasted Time” and “New Kid in Town” – Eagles
“A Song for You” – Leon Russell (especially the Donny Hathaway version – killer sad!)
“A Day In The Life of A Tree” – Beach Boys
“Ain’t No Sunshine” – Bill Withers
    “Lipstick Sunset” – John Hiatt
“End of The World” – Skeeter Davis
“I’ll Be Seeing You” – standard
“Long Long Time” and “Adios” – Linda Ronstadt
“Long and Winding Road” – Beatles
“Surf’s Up” and “Till I Die” – Beach Boys
“Gotta Get A Message To You” – Bee Gees
    Waah/sob/boo-hoo – 🙂

  37. The name of the really sad song is “My Immortal”.
It’s #4 & also #12 on the cd. It’s not listed as #12 on the cd, but it’s there if you let it play after song #11. Anyway, the whole cd is great and is totally worth the money.
    Hope this helped!
    Christy

  38. Like Christy said, “My Immortal” has two versions on the CD. Track 12 is my favorite too.
I like the entire CD. They’re all sad songs though. Really depressing in a good way.
I *LOVE* Hal Ketchum’s “Stay Forever” and Tim McGraw’s “Angry All The Time”. Lots of your favorites are on my list too.
I’ll have to think about my favorite sad songs list. “Moving On” by some country group whose name I can’t remember is one I really like, although I guess it’s happy because he’s moving on from the bad stuff in his life.
And I love Barry Manilow too.

  39. Here are a few that always make me cry:
“Holes In The Floor of Heaven” – Steve Wariner
“Don’t Laugh At Me” – Mark Wills
    “Valentine” – Martina McBride
    Linda in NJ

  40. Whoohoo I ordered it and another magnet. Thanks so much for the link! I no longer have to envy yours! Hee!

  41. Oh another sad song..The living years-Mike and the Mechanics. I don’t know why it always bothered me.

  42. LOVE the sad songs! Here is one more:
If You’re Not The One (Daniel Bedingfield)

  43. My two sad songs are, oddly enough, on the same CD — “Stupid Dream” by Porcupine Tree. They are called “Stop Swimming” and “A Smart Kid”:
    Stop Swimming
    Written by Steven Wilson
This song leaks out onto the pavement
It could be a joke, it could be a statement
The more that I fake it and pretend I don’t care
The more you can read in to what isn’t there
Maybe it’s time to stop swimming
Maybe it’s time to find out where I’m at
What I should do and where I should be
But no-one will give me a map
I’ll leave now this can’t continue
But I forget which door I came through
And I know what the lift can be painfully slow
So I’m happy to leave by the window
    A Smart Kid
    Written by Steven Wilson
    Stranded here on planet earth
It’s not much but it could be worse
Everything’s free here, there’s no crowds
    Winter lasted five long years
No sun will come again I fear
    Chemical harvest was sown
And I will wait for you
    Until the sky is blue
And I will wait for you
    What else can I do?
    A spaceship from another star
They ask me where all the people are
    What can I tell them?
I tell them I’m the only one
There was a war but I must have won
    Please take me with you.
Last time I checked, you could listen to Stop Swimming on their web site under Discography > Stupid Dream. URL is:
    http://www.porcupinetree.com/index2.cfm

  44. Just want to add that I laughed out loud at the “I’m shellfish” magnet. I AM easily amused.

  45. “Let That Pony Run” – Pam Tillis (I think)
“You Don’t Even Know Who I Am” – Patty Loveless
“You Were Mine” – Dixie Chicks
Pretty much anything from the Cowboy Junkies Trinity Sessions

  46. I *love* the “Jesus would slap the shit out of you” because the those What Would Jesus Do bumper stickers annoy me.
    My sad songs:
Peter Gabriel “I Grieve” originally on the City of Angels sdtrk and “It is Accomplished” from “Last Temptation of Christ” and “Don’t Give Up” and many many more- Gabriel is my absolute fave and he’s a manic-depressive- so there’s tons of material to choose from.
Warren Zevon “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” from the last album and “Desperados under the Eaves” from 1976.
Joe Jackson “Breaking Us in Two”
Aimee Mann “Save Me” from the Magnolia Sndtrk.
Tracy Chapman “The Promise” and “At this Point in my Life” (these ones always make me cry) Stan Rogers “Northwest Passage”
    Coldplay “Amsterdam”
Blind Boys of Alabama “Amazing Grace” the eeriest thing you ever heard- done to the tune of “House of the Rising Sun”
Joan Osbourne “Man in the Long Black Coat”
Elton John “This Train Don’t Stop”
    Moist “Push” (Canadian)
Paul Simon “Mother and Child Reunion” (uptempo, but gets me- I don’t know why) and “Slip Slidin’ Away”
    Sarah McLaughlin “Stupid” new single

  47. My sad song fav is VAN MORRISON – Wonderful Remark LYRICS
How can you stand the silence
That pervades when we all cry?
How can you watch the violence
    That erupts before your eyes?
How can you tell us something
Just to keep us hangin’ on?
Something that just don’t mean nothing
When we see it you are gone
    Clinging to some other rainbow
While we’re standing, waiting in the cold
Telling us the same old story
    Knowing time is growing old.
    That was a Wonderful Remark
I had my eyes closed in the dark
    I sighed a million sighs
I told a million lies – to myself – to myself
How can we listen to you
When we know your talk is cheap?
    How can we ever question
Why we give more and you keep?
    How can your empty laughter
Fill a room like ours with joy
When you’re only playing with us
Like a child does with a toy?
How can we ever feel the freedom
Or the flame lit by the spark
How can we ever come out even
    When reality is stark?
    That was a Wonderful Remark
I had my eyes closed in the dark – yeah
    I sighed a million sighs
I told a million lies – to myself – to myself
    Baby to myse – e – e – elf

  48. “This Woman’s Work” – Maxwell
Gets me every time. It’s played during a very emotional scene in the movie “She’s Having a Baby” and I sob every single time. Now when I hear that song anywhere, it’s like Pavlov’s Dog…cue waterworks.

  49. Definitely the brick song…”She’s the brick and I’m drowning slowly…Off the coast and i’m heading no where…”
also, there’s a really good new Dave Matthews/Blue Man Group song called “sing along”
It is on the new blue man group cd, but i can’t remember the name of the album.
“If I sing a song will you sing along or will I just keep singing right here by myself…bada bada bada dee dee dee didi dum”

  50. ALl the sad songs were great…and Robyn, glad to hear there is another Suzy Bogguss fan out there. I have all her stuff and just love her.
I have been listening to a lot of Steve Earle lately so my sad song for tonight would be “Somewhere Out There” (by Mr. Earle himself):
Somewhere out there in the world tonight
    just out of my reach
    I hear your heart beat.
It’s comin’ in loud and clear tonight
    poundin’ in my brain
    callin’ out your name.
In the darkness something binds you
to me so that I can find you
when you want me I will be there
waiting on you somewhere out there.
    Somewhere in your heart tonight
    where I have never gone
    you are not alone.
It is tearing me all apart alright
but girl what can I do
when I’m so far from you?
And when I lay me down to sleep
my one and only prayer is you’ll keep
safe from harm until I get wherever you are
    somewhere out there.
If you’re sad or if you’re lonely
if your’e scared or if you’re only
    tired of fightin’, seekin’ shelter
just hold on, I’m somewhere out there.
Somewhere out there in the world tonight
    just out of your reach
    I’ll hear your heart beat.
And I, too, am an avid Van Morrison fan. I took cd’s in when I was in labor and my son was actually born during “Sweet Thing” on the Astral Weeks cd. I wanted to name him Ivan (Van’s real first name) but the old man hated that name.
Oh, another tear jerker is “The Lighthouse’s Tale” from Nickel Creeks first cd, it always puts a huge lump in my throat:
    I am a lighthouse
Worn by the weather and the waves
    I keep my lamp lit
To warn the sailors on their way
    I’ll tell a story
Paint you a picture from my past
    I was so happy
But joy in this life seldom lasts
    I had a keeper
He helped me warn the ships at sea
    We had grown closer
Til his joy meant everything to me
    He was to marry
A girl who shown with beauty and light
    They loved eachother
And with me watched the sunsets into nights
And the waves crashing around me
The sand slipping out to sea
And the winds that blow remind me
Of what has been, and what can never be.
    She had to leave us
My keeper, he prayed for a safe return
    But when the night came
The weather to a raging storm had turned
    He watched her ship fight
But in vain against the wild and terrible wind
    in me so helpless
As dashed against the rocks she met her end.
    Then on the next day
My keeper found her washed up on the shore
    He kissed her cold face
And that they’d be together soon he swore
    I saw him crying
Watched as he buried her in the sand
    Then he climbed my tower
And off the edge of me he ran
    I am a lighthouse
Worn by the weather and the waves
    And though I’m empty
I still warn the sailors on their way.

  53. hey Robyn, I have a list of sad songs but I’m sure everyone else has covered them here. One I DO want to point out is the new one by Leann Rimes called Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way. She sang it at the AMC awards. You can view the video here http://www.leann.net/. Look for the link to the performance. Hope you like it! It’s coming out on her new CD and I can’t wait to pick it up.
    Cheers

  54. Shoot, I also wanted to mention a Sarah McLachlan song called “I Will Not Forget You”. I prefer this one to “I Will Remember You”, it’s much darker and soulful. Check it out

    Everybody Hurts – REM
My Lover’s Prayer – Otis Redding
    Angel – Sarah McLachlan
I think I’ll have to invite Fred to my house for cake. I absolutly HATE the flowers on cakes. UGH. That sugary sweetness is too much, this from a notorious sweet tooth. In fact, there is a great bakery around here that uses these pretty wafer flowers instead.

  56. Try “The Sweetest Gift” by Linda Ronstadt (what’s cheerier than a son in prison?)
“Broken Vow” by Josh Groban (Bitterness and lies!)
“Trying to Get the Feeling Again” from Barry Manilow (Pure despair!)
“If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago (crushing sadness!)

  57. “Moving On” is by Rascal Flats. Sheesh Robyn, can you believe it, 74 comments and going strong about SAD songs. What the hell does this say about us? We all most be morose love-sick readers or those that are unlucky at love, or drunk…….lol
