Olympus Stylus 800 digital camera, because it’s 8 megapixels instead of 7.2. After using it, he’s decided he likes his current camera more, because it’s smaller and fits in his pocket better. But he threw the receipt away, and can’t return the camera. So, if any of you are interested in getting an almost brand new 8 megapixel camera for $300 (that includes shipping), let me know. First come, first served.

You may or may not have noticed that this week my entries are going up later in the day. That’s ’cause I’ve started turning off my computer at night and won’t allow myself to turn it on in the morning until after I’ve exercised, showered, and done some housework. It’s amazing, the amount of shit you can get done in a day when you’re not plopped on your ass in front of the computer. Who knew? I don’t expect this self-discipline to last forever, but hopefully at least for the next few weeks until I can get this damn house whipped into shape.

Yesterday was a busy errand-running day for me. I had a hair appointment at 9, left there at 10:45, went to Sam’s, the grocery store, and then got home around noon. The hair appointment was okay, but I am in despair over my hair. As in, I am not fond of my current hairstyle, but I don’t know what I want to do about it. This is me, currently:
(Shaddup, I know I need to do SOMETHING about my freakin’ eyebrows) And I just don’t like it much. My hair is already pretty thin from the thyroid issues, and I’m freaking out about the possibility of losing even more hair in the coming months due to the surgery. Now, when it comes to thinning hair I think that some people are under the impression that growing out your hair and kind of teasing the top of it will hide a multitude of sins, but I am here to tell you that I’ve seen a woman with very thin hair, and it’s long and teased on the top and all that serves to do is draw your eye to the scalp that is clearly visible under the teased hair. Now, I’m sure I’d rather be skinny and bald than fat and hairified, but what I’d MUCH prefer to be is skinny and hairified, thanks. So anyways, I’ve been looking at hairstyles ever since I knew I was going to have the surgery, and what I’ve heard – and what kind of makes sense if you think about it – is to get a ‘do with short layers. And I’ve found a hairstyle I really like and so I saved the picture to my hard drive so I can think about it, and the more I look at it, the more I think I like it, but I can’t quite take the next step to actually have my hairchick cut my hair like that.
Oh, I don’t knowwwwwww. I know y’all have opinions on the subject, share ’em with me! What I really ought to do is chop all my hair off and buy me a Dolly Parton wig. Can’t beat $19.95!

Actually, I just spent half an hour online looking up “hair loss” and “synthroid”, and found that 1) Possibly I need a T3/ T4 drug combination instead of a standalone T4 and 2) (And I know someone mentioned this to me in the past) They’re thinking now that a higher dose of Synthroid might be the way to go because – and I quote – In the 1960s it was textbook material after 70 years of experience using thyroid that a dose below 180 mg of desiccated thyroid could not be measured clinically or in the laboratory. In other words it was without effect. The approximate equivalent dose of synthroid or thyroxine (T4) would be about 180 micrograms. Maybe I should just suck it up and make an appointment with my doctor to discuss hair loss issues and the shit I’ve found online (I KNOW doctors have got to LOVE the internet. How many times do you suppose they hear “I was looking around on the internet and….” and just cringe?). I could have her look at the ugly mole on the back of my neck while she’s at it!

Who needs a lawnmower when you have a Sugarbutt? I imagine that when Miz Poo woke up and realized she was snuggling with Tommy, there was a serious smackdown. “How YOU doin’?”
All of today’s uploaded pictures are hither.

  1. I like your freakin eyebrows. They look like Madonna’s when she was young. Now she, and many other female celebs pluck their eyebrows down to nearly nothing, and I think it just ages them. The Halle Barry hairstyle would be good, but make sure your hairdresser assures you that your hair would do that (different textures can make a big difference). I would think that with a cut like that, you could just finger a bunch of gel through it, and let it go, and it would be easy and sassy.

  2. Love the Halle hair! I say go for it. And I agree that shorter is better for thinning hair.
I often remark about how much I get done on the weekends without my computer on, but that only occasionally stops me from turning it on as soon as I get up!
And I say “I saw on the Internet” to my docs all the time. They rarely roll their eyes, at least on the outside.

  3. I just recently cut my hair short. It was down to the middle of my back and driving me nuts. The best thing to do, as it turns out, is just find a good hair stylist and discuss your issues with them. A good stylist knows best what cut will suit your hair and your face shape. Mine did! I wasted a few hours on the internet looking for a “picture” to show her and she didn’t even look at it! Heh.

  4. I’ll talk to hairdresser husband tonight and ask him, then get back to you. There is this stuff called Nioxin that he swears by for thinning hair. I’ll send you some if he thinks it would help (you have to be a hairdresser to get it).

  5. P.S. Whoever said it earlier is right- you can pick a hairstyle butif *your* texture hair won’t accommodate it, you can’t do it. I’ll ask.

  6. I’ve been on thyroid meds for 12 years, and I’m on a combination of synthroid and cytomel (T3). I love it! I’ve been on Armour and Thyrolar (T3/T4 combos) as well, and I like those too, but not as much. It sucks, but you have to play with it a little. If your doc is reluctant, then find a new doc or endocrinologist.

  7. Short layers is GREAT for thin hair!!! I say go for it! A short & sassy do for a smart & sassy woman!

  8. I agree. Shorter hair for thinning hair. And they can do WONDERS with all the hair goop that doesn’t even make your hair feel goopey or stiff.
    Good luck.

  9. Along w/ consulting your hairdresser about the texture of your hair, etc., You might also want to sign up on this site – http://www.thehairstyler.com.
It’s a little corny but it allows you to upload a pic of yourself and then “try on” hairstyles. I tried it and it really gave me some perspective on some cuts I was considering!

  10. I know how you *love* the unsolicited advice (heh), but I would guess with almost 100% certainty the hair in that Halle photo cost at least $2500 just to style for whatever event she was attending that night. I tell my husband all the time that I’m in the wrong line of work — celebrity hair and makeup people make serious bank. Christine (above) makes an excellent point — a really good stylist will take your hair texture, face shape and, most importantly, lifestyle into consideration. I finally found someone who actually listened and now I only have to get mine done about every 6 months because the cuts grow out so nicely.
And, by the way, your eyebrows look great — they have SUCH a nice, natural shape.

  11. I felt the same way you did about getting my shoulder length hair cut after WLS but yesterday I just decided I was ready for a change and got my hair cut short in a style very similar to Halle and LOVE it. I don’t know what took me so long!!!
Have you tried taking Biotin for your hair loss. Mine was coming out in handfuls after my surgery and I took it religiously for months. My hair stopped falling out and became thicker than ever.
    Just a suggestion.
Oh and I think your brows are just fine, too.

  12. Love the short do. My mom has very thin hair from a thyroid condtion as well. She keeps it short and sassy-it looks great! When it starts to grow out you can really tell how thin it is.
I can’t wait to see the pics of you from your surgery.

  13. Someone up above mentioned Nioxin. I can’t speak to how well the product line helps to control thinning hair (although I know it was created to do just that), but I’ve been using the shampoo and conditioner for years because both kick serious ass when it comes to cleaning and moisturizing my hair/scalp. Twelve thumbs up for Nioxin!

  14. 1. I have short hair and I don’t see how people even function with long hair, so I highly recommend it. 2. Have that hairy mole on the back of your neck REMOVED before you cut your hair short (hee!), and 3. I like your eyebrows, too. Mine are too thin, so I’m letting them grow back a little, and I look like a band of hungry moths attacked them.

  15. I love the Halle Berry cut — I rocked that for a couple years until I (unadvisedly) got it cut even shorter, and now I’m growing it out so I can figure out what I want to do.
It’s easy to style, looks fabulous — your hairchick will just need to make adjustments for however your particular hairgrowth goes, because the picture *I* brought in would have left me looking mullety.

  16. I’m all for a chin-length bob, no layers. Because it is short enough to be tossy if you need it to be, but you are not a slave to hair goo products, which is what happens every time I ever get a shorter hair cut because I think it will be easier than long hair. I end up having to shampoo and style and style and style to get it to stick up cute like in the pictures. And with your BIG BLUE EYES nobody will notice a little thinning hair, trust me! Oh, hey, what is that collar for around Sugarbutts neck? K-I-D-D-I-N-G!

  17. Go for the shorter do….you know the worst scenario is you hate it and have to work at growing it back out….but I think you will look good….go and pamper yourself one day and have your eyebrows done professionally and then you can maintain from there…..

  18. Robyn. ROBYN! Am I the only one who looked at that picture of you and immediately screamed…LOOK AT THOSE CHEEK BONES! Your face, my dear, is definitely a different shape than the last pic you posted above mouth of your hair! Can’t wait to see below your nose!
As for your hair, I would go shorter. I’ve been shorter for years because of my fine, thinning hair and every time I get a bug up my butt to go longer I drive myself insane and end up cutting it only to say, “ahhhh…short is good”.

  19. I used thehairstylerdotcom last week! It is corny, but it was fun, and it truly helped me describe to my hairstylist what I wanted! I wanted to go short again with my thin hair that seems thicker when it is short, and since I couldn’t verbalize my feelings very well, the pictures I narrowed it down to helped her figure out what I wanted. A weight has literally been lifted off my shoulders and I am so happy to have short hair again–that I can actually style at home! Now I need to go get some Nioxin and try that!
Ya’ll are the greatest, Robyn & readers!

  20. I didn’t read all the comments, so maybe this is a repeat, but the hairstyle you chose is extremely labor intensive. I’m pretty sure you’re not the sort who wants to spend 20+ minutes fixing your hair every day.
I say you take it as it comes. See what your hair loss is like and keep messing with your hair until you find something that you like, is easy to fix and looks good on you.
p.s. shorter is better if you have thin hair.

  21. Hey Robyn! You’ve received a lot of great comments about hairstyles. I have some unsolicited comments about thin hair to share.. =)
I started losing hair right after my daughter’s birth when I was 23. I’m 34 now. I’d tried Nioxin (which did help some but not for my level of dramatic hair loss), and Rogaine for men (which helped considerably, but you could still see my scalp and it was annoying as all get out).
Finally, last May, I went and tried on some wigs, fully hoping to hate it. OH MY LOMA!!! I will never ever go back. Even if I grew in a full head of hair overnight, I will never leave my house to go somewhere I need to look nice without a wig. It takes me – seriously – less than 5 minutes to get ready in the morning, and the 5 minutes is just for some basic makeup. I used to spend almost an hour trying to get my hair to look decent!! The wig looks perfect all day long, is light and breathe-able, stays in place even in wind and rain, and no one believes it’s a wig! Seriously, I went into a wig shop one day wanting looking at some products and the store owner was annoyed with me until I whispered that I was wearing a wig. She was totally surprised and didn’t believe me until I moved it!
    So….wigs = good things. =)

  22. Hair grows back, hon. I say do it. When my diabetes was confirmed and I was looking at a lot of lifestyle changes, one of the things I did was cut my hair. Part of it was that waist-length hair had just become a huge bother. It took hours to dry and being baby fine, it tangled if I moved my head! I was at the point where I was tearing out the tangles with a comb instead of coaxing them out. The other part was that I just looked sick, and the long, lank hair made me look worse. So I walked into my salon and said “BUZZ CUT!” Fortunately my stylist calmed me down and we went for short, but not radical. I’ve never been sorry I did it. Not only is it way simpler to take care of, but I’ve gotten a measure of “kinda cute” back. I keep it short and wispy or spiky and I never even need to do more than wash, gel and fluff. And it’s heaven when I’m all sweaty from a workout. Head under the faucet, quick wash, fluff, I’m good to go.

  23. Hey Robyn! I’ve been a stylist for 19 years now and one thing you need to remember is that any coloring in the med to dark series(browns, reds and dark blondes) will draw attention to the lighter colored scalp underneath. Several of my clients who have thin hair or ‘thinning issues’ due to meds, illness or age have come around to the idea of some well placed highlights and the difference is remarkable.. really!

  24. ….Of course, that wasn’t the $19.95 Dolly Parton costume wig, though….
Classywigs.com is a good wholesaler, but I tried on about 50 wigs at a store before I found the “perfect” one for me that I could purchase from the website. My last 2 wigs were $35 each, but my first 4 were in the $80-$150 range (Kentucky).

  25. I like the short “Halle Hair” – I think you’d look spunky!
BUT – I cut off 13 inches of my long hair for Locks of Love a couple of years ago – and went for a short layered do – and disliked how high maintenance it was…I couldn’t just wash and go – I had to wash, goop, blow dry and style, otherwise it’d hand like a mop on my head. I have very fine hair that only looks thick if I put lots of crap in it.
Just a warning – but it might be worth a shot, hair does grow!
Also – did Fred paint the office a grayish color? Can you tell me what color that is? Hubby and I have been looking for a gray in our office – and I like how nice yours looks with the white molding!

  26. I recently chopped off my hair, from shoulder-length to short-short. I mean boy-short. And I love it. Although I was almost in tears when I first saw it in the mirror at the salon, because it was such a shock (I haven’t had my hair THAT short in years). So, if you do go choppy-short, be prepared: it will take some getting used to seeing yourself in the mirror with a lot less hair.
I had short, choppy layers like Berry’s a few years back, and styling was actually quite easy for me (and I have thick, wavy/curly hair that usually doesn’t take too kindly to short layers at all). After washing my hair, I would towel-dry it until it was over half-dry, then use a hair stick (my favorite was TIGI Bed Head) on my hair–rubbing the gel stick from UNDERNEATH the hair so that it would make it flip up.
As for thinning hair, Nioxin works wonders. I’ve had several friends rave on and on about it.
By the way, that last picture of Sugarbutt? Priceless!

  27. I have a modified version of that cut, you can see an example of it here: http://www.barbaraniven.com/photosvideo/shoots.htm
It’s an easy easy style, I just put some mousse on after I wash it and blow it dry aiming up to get that “flip” action. If I really want to get it flippy, I use a hair dryer/curling brush thing and finish it off with some generic wax stuff that you can get at Sally’s.
I’m sure it’ll look great no matter what you decide to do!

  28. I think that if you want to have the look of thicker hair that length and a similar cut will do the trick. also, I really like your hair colour. it suits your skin. I don’t know why I thought it was a reddish colour…

  29. I just have to say that it looks like your face is changing shape. Also, your eyebrows aren’t strange; it’s just you always seem to raise them when you take a self-portrait! :^) I have that problem, too.
That haircut would look cute, but it’s probably a lot of up-keep, with the gel and all.

  30. I have thyroid problems and the thinning hair issue too.
My hair looks best when I get up in the morning(whatttt???)because it’s been a long time since it had been combed or brushed. The moment I run a brush or comb through,my hair goes flat and limp.
I have a shoulder-length bob with LONG layers. My best hair tip(I get LOTS of compliments when I use this technique) is to blow dry the hair with no brushing or combing. Just blow the hair every which way to get volume and texture. Then bend over,”shake your head darling,” stand-up and let the hair fall where it may. DO NOT use a comb or brush or you lose all of the texture and volume.
No other method works for me,and I have tried them all.
The comment above regarding using lighter streaks to help thin hair be less obvious is GENIUS! Thank you!
No matter what style you choose Robyn, you ARE beautiful!

  31. Hey Robyn. I’m 3 months shy of graduating from hairstyling school, and my mom also suffers from very thin hair. She is in her late 60’s and so her little pink scalp was quite visible through her white hair. Since September she has come to the school every week for a ‘scalp manipulation’. I take a couple of really good quality conditioning treatments and apply them to her hair with a brush. I then massage them into her scalp for @ 15 minutes, then put a cap on her and sit her under a dryer for 15 minutes to allow the conditioner to absorb into her scalp. Her hair has grown in UNBELIEVABLY since we started doing this-her doctor is even amazed! Her hair is much fuller now, and her scalp is barely visible at all!
As for the hairstyle you’re looking at, I’d like to see your whole face before offering any opinions. Like others have said, her hair has obviously been styled professionally for that pic, but her hair doesn’t appear to be thin or fine. Your face shape plays a big part in the style you choose, as you want to find one that flatters your features. Your eyes are GORGEOUS and I’d love to see you in something that accentuates them. Have you always worn a full bang? Ever think of perhaps an off center part with a side bang? Just some food for thought. A new hairstyle is a great way to emphasize your weight loss and put a bit of pep in your step. Good Luck!!

  32. Leanne is absolutely correct scalp massage does wonders for stimulating the blood circulation and opening hair follicles that may have been plugged from hair products and pollutants. You can do this when you shampoo and condition, just make sure your fingers pads are on your scalp and not just on your hair. Also apple cider vinegar does wonders for getting build up off of your hair and scalp making it shinier and fuller. Use 1/3 cup of vinegar mixed with 2/3 cup water and slowly pour through wet hair massaging on scalp and hair. Rinse, rinse, rinse with warm water. You may smell like an easter egg for a bit, but it is well worth it. I do this when I notice my hair is looking limp or drab. By the way I owned my own shop for 12 yrs and helped lots of women with thinning hair, one of them being my mom. The hairstyle you have of Halle takes alot of product and styling time, so you may want to consider getting a body wave if you are going to give it a try.

  33. CUT IT ALL OFF! DO IT! DO IT! I recently chopped off a few inches and it was the best decision ever. It was in the middle of my back (just about, it pretty much hit my bra strap) and I chopped it off to just below my shoulders. Nothing drastic but it made a world of difference. I think the haircut would be flattering on you too.

  34. Your face looks so thin! Lookin’ good Robyn!
My grandmother’s thyroid was so bad she lost eyebrows and eyelashes so take heart in that you have some and I think they look fine, they are even! 🙂
Love the Halle cut, I think you would look cute!

  35. I would bet that the thin hair would actually be a boon to that shag-based Halle ‘do. I’m sure the stylist knows how to work with it and if it wouldn’t work, she’d say so. I say go for it. That cut is long enough that if it doesn’t work, there are alternatives afterward (but I bet it will).
PS: Dolly wig? Totally. I’d do it in a second (esp for $20).

  36. I LOOOVE short hair and the fact that you get out of the shower, throw some goop in it and you are DONE! DO IT! It will go well with your rapidly thinning face my dear.
